My first CSA box!

Today I picked up my first CSA box. Yay!

CSA stands for community supported agriculture. Essentially, I bought into a farm. For the next ten weeks, I'll pick up a box of organic, farm-fresh, locally grown produce and I am really looking forward to it.

I was inspired to participate in CSA for a couple of reasons. I first learned about it from blogger Rebecca Blood in her project Eating Organic on a Food Stamp Budget. At that time, I didn't really care too much about organic or local foods; I was really interested in the culinary challenge posed by a weekly box of mystery foods. However, I've recently been reading about eating local and organic, and it really has been resonating with me (more on that another time). What I will say now, however, is that supermarket produce just isn't doing it for me. So I signed up.

Today's box included 2 heads of lettuce (some really frilly variety), 5 large tomatoes, 4 red peppers, 1 yellow pepper, a pint or so of yellow/orange cherry tomatoes, a bunch of white salad turnips, some string beans, some romano beans, and a small bunch of parsley. GREAT!
